Ana Maria established Community Insights in 2002. Her particular expertise lies in working out how resource-affected regions and communities can benefit from the presence of energy and extractive projects. She has advised global resources companies such as Total, Shell, Tullow Oil, Anglo American, ArcelorMittal, Lundin Mining, Rio Tinto and BHP; development finance institutions such as the World Bank and IFC; and governments such as Iceland on their Master Plan for Nature Protection and Energy Utilization.

Ana Maria’s passion is in sharing of knowledge and improvement in standards of practice. She has published in academic journals, chaired conferences, managed research partnerships, led study tours for government officials, developed courses, established SIAhub (an online platform for the social impact assessment community of practice). She is co-author of the International Association for Impact Assessment’s Guidance (IAIA) for Social Impact Assessment and lead author for IPIECA’s Local Content Guidance. She is past President of the board of the IAIA (2016-17) and current member of the Editorial Board for the association’s journal, Impact Assessment & Project Appraisal.

Ana Maria completed an economics degree in South Africa. She also holds an MBA from Melbourne Business School and PhD (on the topic of extractives and social development) from the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is a graduate of the Company Directors Course of the Australian Institute for Company Directors.
Ana Maria is a native Portuguese speaker and has basic Dutch, Spanish and Afrikaans. Mozambique-born, she is now based in Groningen, The Netherlands.
